Tongue & Groove Door

The Tongue & Groove Door is a solid, heavy door. It is called a tongue and groove door because of the specific interlocking wood joints used to construct it. One edge of a wooden board has a protruding ridge (the tongue), and the opposite edge has a matching recessed slot (the groove), allowing the pieces to fit flush together and that’s how the door is manufactured. We use the same tongue and groove snug fitting connection on our remilled flooring, cladding and other recycled timber products.

Because all the timbers are the full thickness of the door, it insulates well and is very secure. When built using the correct timber species, this door will meet high BAL ratings for bushfire protection. With two fixed cross rails, it is more limited in size (width) than an Insulated Clad Door, meaning it cannot be built as wide as an insulated clad door, except as a sliding door.

Design Options

The Tongue and Groove door can be built with the boards running vertically or horizontally depending on which design aesthetic you prefer.

Designed for Sheltered Entrances

This door is not suitable for highly exposed positions as this could cause excessive expansion of the tongue and groove boards. Like most timber external doors it needs a covered porch which will protect it from the weather.

Ensure you have enough cover protection on the entry way if you are leaning towards this design for your new front door. If your front door is exposed to the rain then we would probably not recommend a tongue and groove door, speak to our design team should you have any queries.

Sizes & Specifications

Door thickness is 40 - 46mm [depending on a Clean or Sawtooth finish]. 40mm thickness is the standard thickness for Australian doors. The maximum door size for a hinged Tongue & Groove door is 2400 x 1000mm.
