At Thor's Hammer, we house a curated collection of unique, one-off recycled timbers dressed and ready to go from the racks; and character-rich natural live-edge slabs available rough sawn, lightly dressed or fully sanded back. Instead of these magnificent urban trees going to waste or woodchips, we salvage them to give them a second life.

Whether you are a professional builder, a weekend DIY enthusiast, or working closely with our custom furniture design team, these slabs and one-off timbers are salvaged, seasoned, and ready to be transformed.
If you’re looking for a particular size or species, please don’t hesitate to drop in to 10 Mildura Street Griffith to peruse the timber racks or see what live edge timber slabs we have available.
Natural edge timber slabs
The natural bark edge of our timber slabs makes a beautiful feature in bench tops, tables and furniture. We source our slabs from salvaged street trees, road works and other farm or backyard trees that have been properly authorised to be removed. The slabs can be sold for your next DIY woodworking project, or we can manufacture the recycled timber into tables, slab bench seats, shelving, mantle pieces, floating shelves or used for wide table tops for tables and desks.
Moisture Content of Slabs
All our slabs are moisture checked and are ready to use for furniture making. A freshly felled tree can be up to 60% moisture content, but for the timber to be stable and usable we have to get that number down to around 10 - 14% depending on the application - and without the timber cupping and cracking.
Our slabs are either kiln dried, or air dried for more than 5 years. When air dried, the green wood is stacked with small wooden spacers ("stickers") between the layers to let air circulate. This slow process typically takes one year per 25mm of thickness to reduce warping and cracking. Before a slab is ready for sale we use a moisture meter driven into the wood to determine the internal moisture content of each slab.
Slabs can be supplied rough sawn, or sanded for your own DIY projects. All slabs can be turned into a piece of feature furniture with our design and joinery teams.
Timber Species
What slab timber species we have available depends on what we’ve been able to salvage. We regularly receive timber species slabs such as Red Gum, Forest Red Gum and River Red Gum. We sometimes see timber slabs in QLD Maple, Elm, Tulip Oak, Himalayan Cedar, and Honey Locust, but these are a lot rarer, so if you’re looking for something specific, the best bet is to make an enquiry or give us a call.
We do have quite a few QLD Maple slabs at the moment that are ready to go. So if you’re keen on QLD Maple, drop by the lumberyard to see the slabs available.

Sizes & Prices
Our recycled timber slabs range from 200mm up to 1000mm wide and 1000mm to 3600mm long. If you’re after a particular size for a table or coffee table top, just let us know and we’ll work with you to provide the slab at the dimensions you require. Slabs are priced via dimensions - the bigger and thicker the slab the more expensive it will be.
The slabs are marked with size and species, please speak to one of the design and sales team who will be able to price the slab for you.
We typically always have a range of slabs available at the workshop, 10 Mildura Street, Griffith ACT. Give us a call or drop by to see what’s currently available, we’re open 8am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturdays.
