Thor’s Hammer supplies recycled demolition timber for builders, architects, joiners, furniture makers and DIY woodworkers across Australia.

Salvaged from old houses, factories, warehouses, bridges and wharves, these old-growth Australian hardwoods are given a second life in new projects. Every piece of timber carries the character of its previous life, with rich colour, saw marks, nail holes and natural patina that cannot be replicated in new material. Processed in our Canberra workshop, our demolition timber is available in a wide range of species, sizes and finishes, with both full timber packs and individual boards available depending on your project.

Recycled Timber for Projects of Every Size

Our recycled demolition timber is available as:

  • Individual boards from the racks for smaller projects and woodworking

  • Large quantities picked to order for building and commercial projects

Dressed Timbers from the Racks

For smaller projects, customers can browse individual recycled timber boards from the racks at our Canberra workshop. We have a large variety of species and sizes available for your next DIY project. The timber has already been dressed, with a few undressed timber pieces available (speak to one of our design team if you’re looking for undressed timber).

Popular with:

  • Furniture makers

  • DIY woodworkers

  • Renovators

  • Hobbyists

Customers regularly use these timbers to make shelving, tables, vanities, benchtops, garden projects and custom furniture pieces.

Timber is sorted by species group, with a constantly changing mix of sizes and lengths available. If you are looking for something specific, feel free to contact us before visiting and we can check current stock availability.

Bulk Timbers for Larger Projects

If you can’t find what you need in our Dressed Timber Racks, we also store bulk quantities of demolition timber in large packs, sorted by species group and size. These are suitable for:

  • Structural timbers

  • Exposed beams

  • Pergolas

  • Landscaping

  • Timbers for joinery and furniture making

  • Commercial fit-outs

These timbers can be supplied as is (old sawn), wire brushed, sawtooth, ground and brushed or dressed all round (DAR).

Our team can help recommend suitable species, finishes and sizing for your project.

Pack Break Fees

Because of the forklift work and unstrapping required, a pack break fee (currently $33.75) applies when we need to open our bulk packs to fulfil a smaller order. Pack break fees are not applied to orders over $500.

Recycled timber packs are sorted and separated by timber species.

Length Pricing

Demolition timber is priced across four length brackets. Because the material has already been cut for its original structural use, longer lengths are less common and attract a premium.

Shorter lengths are more readily available and more affordable. Random lengths are the most cost-effective option, as they require minimal handling.

  • Random Lengths — lowest rate

  • Under 2.1m — lower rate

  • 2.1m to 3.6m — standard rate

  • Over 3.6m — higher rate

Our team will always encourage breaking down your order to the shortest practical lengths where possible. This helps reduce costs and improves material availability.

Common Stock Sizes

Availability fluctuates depending on recent demolitions. The following is a general guide of the common stock sizes we salvage from demolitions.

Available Species

When processing structural timbers from a demolition, there are usually between 5 and 15 species present. Some are sorted individually, while others of similar durability and colour remain grouped together, following the tradition of old Australian sawmills. The photos below show how the old sawn demolition timbers look as is, and below, the same timber dressed back to reveal the grain and colour. Of course, after oiling the colour will become a lot more intense. See our benchtop page for images of the oiled timbers.

We also occasionally receive small quantities of specialty species including Kauri Pine, Hoop Pine, Tulip Oak and Cypress Pine from house and old commercial building demolitions.

Available Finishes

We can supply demolition timber in a variety of finishes, with samples of each available to view in our showroom.

  1. Old Sawn. The old rough sawn surface that has darkened with age. Sizes vary around 5-10% as the timber has shrunk and moved with age.

  2. Wire Brushed. Brushed to smooth the rough sawn surface and remove splinters and dirt. This finish retains the Old Sawn look while making the surface more friendly to handle.

  3. Ground & Brushed. Lightly ground with a coarse sanding disc to bring back some colour, and then wire brushed for a smoother surface.

  4. Sawtooth. Lightly dressed to reveal some of the colour and grain but retain patches of the old sawn surface. Works best on timbers less than 100mm wide.

  5. Dressed All Round (DAR). Planed back through our machines to give a consistent size and fully reveal the grain and colour. Sizes are accurate to the mm. May still have small patches of old sawn surface on one face and edge unless you specify otherwise.
