East Corrimal House - How a Visit to Thor’s Hammer Changed This Whole Renovation

July 2025

What started as a search for recycled timber flooring turned into a full-scale timber showcase for this stunning East Corrimal renovation. The owner originally came to Thor’s Hammer looking for recycled timber flooring, but after a visit to our timber yard, left with a vision for using beautiful recycled timber throughout the entire project — inside and out.

Location: East Corrimal, Wollongong
Completed: December 2024
Architect: Owner / Builder
Builder: Building & Construction HC
Timber Species: Mountain Ash (Flooring) / Blackbutt (Decking & Cladding)
Sourced From: Heritage building in Canberra / Port Kembla

If you’re planning a new build, renovation, or extension, a visit to Thor’s Hammer is more than just timber shopping — it’s a chance to collaborate, get inspired, and discover materials and ideas you might not have considered. Our design team works closely with homeowners, builders, and architects to enhance designs with character-rich, sustainably salvaged timber.

Collaboration & Craft

When the owner and the builder, Building & Construction HC, first visited Thor’s Hammer to look at flooring, they were still early in the design process and were able to incorporate more recycled timber into the house design.

Harry from Building & Construction HC, had been following Thor’s Hammer social media for years and leapt at the opportunity to work with our recycled timber on this exceptional project.

The result is a beautiful coastal home where recycled timber plays a starring role, adding warmth, texture, and history to every room.

What we supplied

We initially supplied 135sqm of Mountain Ash flooring (82 x 19mm boards). We used remilled Blackbutt for the outside decking (83 x 18mm boards) and then various size Blackbutt boards for the internal and external cladding, stairwell treads, handrails, skirting around the windows, timber features and we supplied three 5m posts to be used as structural supports.

We supplied almost 200 square metres and over 100 lineal metres of recycled timber posts and beams for this project and you can see it was put to good use. Every board, post, and plank was carefully remilled and finished with precision, showcasing the intricate grains and hues that only recycled Australian hardwoods can offer.

The rich, dense tones of Blackbutt make it ideal for both internal and external applications, allowing the homeowner to maintain a consistent timber palette throughout the house. Over time, external timbers will naturally age and silver with exposure to the elements, while both interior and exterior timbers can be refreshed and protected with natural oil finishes like Osmo.

A Special Story

One of the standout details in this project is the story behind the timber itself. Recycled Blackbutt, once part of an industrial shed at Port Kembla, was brought back to life and returned to the very region it once served. From its industrial beginnings to its new role in a sunlit beach house, the timber now tells a story of transformation—a reminder of how history can live on in new and beautiful ways. Build went really well. Between you and Harry, I found the best timber men in Australia. Thank you so much for setting me on this path. I could not be happier.
