Our Nominated Projects
Anzac Park East Concierge Desks
Finalist: Furniture & Joinery
Thor's Hammer was commissioned by Amalgamated Property Group to design and manufacture two bespoke concierge desks as sculptural art pieces for the new Anzac Park East precinct in Canberra. One desk welcomes visitors to the commercial office building, while the second sits within the Eastbourne Apartments.
Rather than creating conventional reception furniture, the brief was to produce pieces that referenced the history and heritage of the site. The desks draw direct inspiration from the original Anzac East building—translating its distinctive façade, vertical window rhythm, and structural columns into contemporary timber joinery. Constructed from recycled Blackbutt and Blue Gum salvaged from 1960s Canberra homes, the desks create a tangible connection between the era of the original building and its modern replacement. Aesop Canberra Centre Store Fitout
Entered: Fitout Commercial and Public
Aesop's Canberra Centre boutique store demonstrates how recycled Australian hardwood can completely define the identity of a commercial interior. Rather than adopting a standard retail layout, Aesop collaborated with Thor's Hammer to create an immersive space that responds directly to Canberra's local character, utilizing recycled Blue Gum and Coastal Reds across the flooring, walls, and ceiling.
Working alongside Aesop's design teams in Melbourne and France, Thor's Hammer developed a series of innovative prefabricated parquetry and cladding systems. The result is a striking retail environment where the material language flows uninterrupted from floor to ceiling, showcasing the beauty, durability, and versatility of recycled Australian hardwood. Batten House
Entered: Residential Class 1 - New Building
Batten House is a collaborative knockdown-rebuild project that demonstrates how recycled Australian hardwood can become a defining architectural element when considered from the earliest stages of design. Working closely with Ben Walker Architects, Ewer Constructions, and the homeowners, Thor's Hammer supplied more than 10.4 kilometers of recycled timber throughout the build.
Rather than treating recycled timber as a minor feature material, the project integrates it seamlessly throughout the entire home—from external cladding and decking to bespoke furniture crafted from the original home's salvaged timbers. The result is a contemporary family home that celebrates durability, sustainability, and craftsmanship while preserving the unique stories carried within each piece of timber. LEARN MORE.
