Saving Timber from Landfill

When you’re committed to salvaging and recycling timber, every board matters. At Thor’s Hammer, we do our best to ensure as much timber as possible is saved from landfill. Over more than 30 years, we’ve refined our designs and processes to reuse and reimagine recycled timber into worthwhile, long-lasting products.

Earlier this year, we shared a story about the noble 4x2 (originally sawn to 4 inches x 2 inches or 100mm x 50mm) , a common and versatile size we use to make flooring, decking, and bespoke furniture. But there’s another size worth talking about: the 3x2.

The Often Overlooked 3x2

We also salvage our share of 3x2 (75mm x 50mm) timber stock, a size widely used in construction for rafters, roofing battens and framing in garages and outbuildings built from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s. If you think of the typical stand alone garage that sat at the end of the driveway, next to a typical 1950’s-60’s suburban 3 beddie home on a ¼ acre block - that’s where most of the 3x2 was used. It’s been concealed in the structure for decades, naturally drying and seasoning over time.

Because it is mostly salvaged from smaller buildings, 3x2’s are generally only available in shorter lengths under 3.0m, with most coming in at 2.0-2.4m. The 3x2 is often overlooked, but it’s an incredibly useful size with many creative applications.

3 x 2 timber packs ready to go, perfect for re-milled narrow flooring

Narrow Re-Milled Flooring – Classic and Timeless

We love the look of our narrow re-milled floor boards. These narrower floorboards create a more classic, traditional appearance and are often used in heritage or period homes to achieve an authentic vintage feel.

Re-milled from recycled timber, these boards are typically 55mm wide and 18mm thick, featuring a tongue and groove joint for easy installation.

Benefits of Narrow Timber Boards

  • Stable, With Less Movement: Narrow timber boards are less prone to cupping or visible movement with humidity changes. This is the reason they were often chosen for dance and gym floors where a tight, even and stable floor is very important.

  • Visually Elongating: Their slim profile creates a sleek, linear appearance that can make smaller rooms feel wider and larger.

  • Visually Interesting: More joins between boards create a more textured floor that adds depth and visual appeal.

We offer a full range of timber species for narrow re-milled flooring, so you can achieve the exact look and finish you’re after. Contact our design team to learn more.

DIY Projects Made Easy

The 3 x 2 timber stock is also perfect for a range of DIY projects, saving you both time and effort.

From Cubby Houses to Cabinets

  • Framing: Ideal for small structures like cubby houses, henhouses, or dog kennels. The natural seasoning from decades of use makes these timbers dense, stable, and strong, perfect for backyard builds.

  • Cabinetry: Excellent for frame-and-panel cabinet doors in kitchens or furniture builds.

  • Furniture: A great choice for table rails and other components in smaller furniture pieces.

  • Internal fitouts: We can make narrow 60x18mm skirting boards and architraves which match the sizes often used in mid-century homes.

Durable Timber for Outdoor Projects

For outdoor applications, durable recycled hardwoods such as Ironbark, Spotted Gum, and Blackbutt can be used as landscaping timbers. Shorter 3 x 2 boards are ideal for posts, beams, or fencing panels, offering a strong and sustainable alternative to new timber.
