What's in the yard? Stock Update May 2025
Welcome to our stock update for May 2025, ‘What’s In The Yard?’.
To help you to keep across our current timber availability, we’ve taken stock of some of the unusual and interesting timbers that are currently on site and ready to go.
Every week new stock comes into our yard from our demolition partners. It might be salvaged from the demolition of a Canberra house, or it could be from a landmark building, a wharf or an old Sydney factory or warehouse. These jobs can be big, with huge quantities of timber, or small with just a few packs arriving. Over time, our stock builds up in certain species or sizes—giving the chance for us to supply larger quantities quickly—and the chance for you to get creative with this resource!
This is but a small sample of the timber we have available in a variety of sizes and timber species. Feel free to come in and visit our timber yard and chat to one of our design team about your next project.
Alverson Shipwrights BlackbutT Flooring
Continuing our nautical theme (following the Sydney Ferry timbers), we just received 4 big packs of blackbutt flooring from a shipwrights on the Parramatta River. We will be processing it as soon as we can, but until we have docked out all the broken ends and defects, we won’t know the exact quantity. There should be close to 150m2 all up.
Where did it come from?
Salvaged from the Alverson Shipwrights building in Putney - built in the 1930s.
Quantity & Dimensions
Approx 150 m2 of 85 x 21mm boards
What can it be used for?
This 1930’s floor has a great patina, and has the typical fine dark surface checking and rich colour that blackbutt gets after a long life as a workshop or factory floor. We normally only salvage around 60-80m2 from a normal house demolition, so it’s exciting to have a larger factory floor available. This salvaged floor would be perfect for a new build or a large extension.

Dense Hardwoods
We are currently de-nailing and sorting two semi trailer loads of factory purlins that came down from a Brisbane demolition.
Species
A mixed bag of dense hardwoods - ironbark, spotted gum, blackbutt and forest red gum
Where did it come from?
An old Brisbane factory built in the 1930's.
Dimensions & Lengths
Mostly 175 x 50mm wide boards, with smaller quantities of 150x50mm and 200x50mm. Lengths range from 2-4m.
What can it be used for?
These are durable, dense hardwoods which are great for both indoor and outdoor applications. For indoor use, it would make beautiful tables, kitchen island benchtops or shelving units. These old purlins would be a good size for pergola rafters, outdoor table tops, balustrades and other exposed structural timbers.

Forest Red Gum Slabs
About
The natural bark edge of these slabs makes a beautiful feature in bench tops, tables and furniture. Forest Red Gum often also features unusual grain pattern like fiddleback, as well as interesting sap veins and gum pockets which we fill with a clear resin when making a finished product.
Where did it come from?
The forest red gum slabs came from the clearing of a development site in Beaudesert QLD - an old chicken farm that was turned into a housing estate. We brought them down on the same truck with the Brisbane factory timbers.
Dimensions
3.2m long
Slabs are priced via dimensions - the bigger the slab the more expensive it is.
What can it be used for?
These forest red gum slabs are perfect if you’re considering something with a natural timber edge. The slabs can be sold for your next DIY woodworking project, or we can manufacture the recycled timber into tables, slab bench seats, shelving, mantle pieces or used for wide table tops for tables and desks.

Coastal Reds
About
Coastal Reds are a mix of species of similar colour and density including Southern & Red Mahogany, Blue Gum and Rose Gum. These trees originally came from NSW coastal forests.
Where did it come from?
House & building demolitions in NSW.
Dimensions
100 x 50mm
What can it be used for?
The Coastal Reds create a deep red finish, which make beautiful bench tops and furniture, flooring and internal cladding. They look great lightly dressed with a sawtooth finish as their darker tones complement the blacks in the oiled sawtooth surface. They are not durable enough for external use unless carefully coated.
