New Mountain Ash Salvaged Flooring Available Now

We are excited to receive over 500 sqm of very high quality mountain ash flooring salvaged from Cobram Primary School, located in a small Victorian town along the Murray River. The school will soon begin extensive renovations, adding a brand new learning centre with dedicated STEM and visual art rooms.
But to do so, two wings of classrooms have been demolished. We were contacted by the project team and invited to assess the ‘salvageability’ of the flooring, which for the most part has been hidden under carpet or linoleum during its time in the school.
We think this part of the school was built in the 1960s, judging by the building details and the extensive use of mountain ash as the premium timber back in the 1950s and 1960s. This is the real old growth timber from the big trees – a very close grain, barely any sap veins or knots and a richer colour than new boards.
These mountain ash salvaged floorboards are available at Thor’s Hammer now.
The Cobram flooring is ready to go now – we have just finished pulling out the nails and staples and cleaning the tongue and groove.
They’re high quality, fine-grained ash boards, they are unusually long (5.5m) and nice and wide (108mm wide), and good and thick at 19-20mm, 95% of it having never been polished before.

Recycling Cobram Salvaged Ash Flooring
We’ve cleaned up these floorboards and they’re looking fantastic. Scroll down for some shots of Kris from our Recycling team pulling out staples, and then cleaning and docking the flooring.
It's very clean, fine-grained timber with hardly any sap veins or knots, and it would have come from really big old growth trees. There’s some really interesting markings and patina that have formed as a result of its life under carpet and lino; things like staples, nails and glues.
The boards are in great condition, and at 108mm wide, they are beautiful, wide floorboards. They’ve also only been very lightly sanded once, so there is plenty of thickness in the boards.
We have prepared a sample to show the various options available. On the left side of the sample board you can see three different options if you were to leave them as they are.
On the right, we have sanded back the flooring, and you can see the range of colour in the boards.
Another interesting feature is the length, clocking in at 5.5m long. When laid, this flooring was finger jointed and glued up into 7m lengths which is very uncommon. We had to dock them back to 5.5m for transport but many of the boards are still unusually long. This length would be great for those with projects involving large rooms.
