Canberra Local Ash Timber Packs Now Available

December 2025

We recently received a fresh shipment of Canberra Local Ash timber from our demolition partner Brucic Constructions, salvaged from a home demolition in Garran. The timber has been carefully de-nailed, metal detected and graded in our workshop and is now ready for a new life.

Canberra Local Ash

Canberra Local Ash is our name for a mix of recycled hardwwoods commonly salvaged from older Canberra homes and buildings. It is primarily made up of lighter coloured Ash species like Mountain Ash, Silvertop, Brown Barrel, Alpine Ash and Messmate.

These timbers were the backbone of Canberra’s early construction. As the city grew in the 1940’s and 50’s, ash species from the local forests (sometimes also called “Tasmanian Oak” regardless of where they came from) became a go to material for building roofs, internal frames and flooring. The local hardwoods offered strength, stability and affordability, which is why it was used throughout the classic homes of Garran, Yarralumla, Griffith and other established suburbs.

Canberra Local Ash ranges from pale yellow and blush pink through to soft honey browns, with a fine grain and tight growth rings that give every board a warm, understated elegance. Its soft colour palette means it pairs beautifully with modern interiors, earthy palettes and natural textures.

Why People Love It

Canberra Local Ash carries a story. Every board comes from the bones of homes that shaped the early suburbs. The timber has already lived one full life and is now ready for its second. Using it means honouring Canberra’s heritage while creating something new, functional and beautiful.

Whether you are renovating, making furniture or hunting for your next workshop project, these packs offer both inspiration and a piece of Canberra’s history.

What can we turn the timber into?

At Thor’s Hammer we use Canberra Local Ash to create a wide range of products for homes and commercial spaces. Once we re-mill and prepare the timber, it becomes ideal for flooring, benchtops, internal cladding and custom furniture pieces built in our workshop. Its light colour and fine grain suit everything from contemporary designs to classic interiors. Whether we are crafting a large feature piece or a small detail for a renovation project, this timber allows us to create something beautiful, functional and long lasting.
