Sibley House in Narrabundah – Stunning Showcase of Recycled Reds

The recycled timbers for the Sibley House in Narrabundah were chosen early in the design process, when TT Architecture and the clients came to our workshop for a tour with Thor through our stocks. They ended up settling on Karri boards, a native hardwood with distinctive red hues, which came from the roof trusses of a local demolition of Burnie Court in Lyons, ACT.

It was unusual to choose timber so early in the design process but it worked really well. It allowed TT to think about how to incorporate the unique timbers into the house project from the start and get a consistent choice of species for the inside and outside of the building. It was also quite cost effective as they used up everything we had left in the Burnie Court timbers.

These recycled Karri timbers for the Sibley House had an interesting story. Karri is a giant West Australian tree that was originally used for things like sleepers and structural timbers. When manufactured roof trusses first began being widespread in building they only used hardwoods to make them, and in Canberra the old 1960's and 70's trusses are all made from WA timbers. So the timber for Burnie Court has come a long way to Canberra from the south west WA forests and it's pretty special considering that trusses like that are only made with pine these days.

At Thor’s Hammer we’re really focused on making the best use of our amazing Australian recycled hardwoods that we possibly can. For the Sibley House project we lightly dressed the raw Karri timbers to make board and batten cladding for the exterior entrance wall. We also dressed it right down to make shelving for the kitchen and a beautiful angled kitchen island from some thicker Karri we had from a Melbourne demolition.

After the house was finished, we also came back and made an outdoor table for the clients in recycled Ironbark.
