TIMBER RECYCLERS, JOINERS & FURNITURE MAKERS

Thor’s Hammer builds to last. We believe in quality, in good design and taking care of the environment.

We began recycling in 1994, sourcing timber from local demolition sites to make custom furniture and kitchen tops. Not being able to stand by and see good timber wasted, we salvaged more and more timber from local demolitions, and our stocks of timber grew quickly.

Soon we installed sawing and dressing machinery at our workshop in the Old Canberra Brickworks, and increased our range to include architectural products, such as floor boards, timber cladding, durable hardwood decking and recycled posts and beams.

We recently relocated our stores of timber and our workshops to Griffith ACT, and completely rebuilt the business from the ground up… SEE OUR NEW PREMISES

FROM DEMOLITION TO TABLE

Recycling timber is exciting.

The demolition site is like this massive pillow case at the end of the bed on Christmas morning full of old grey timbers waiting to be planed back and turned into beautiful furniture. Except if the demo guys bust them all cause the excavator operator is a bit rough and doesn't care, or the nails are rusty and won’t come out, or the timber has drying shakes, or…

At Thor’s Hammer we have been recycling timber for over 25 years, and we have gained a lot of experience along the way… READ MORE

RECYCLING AUSTRALIAN TIMBERS

Back in the old days the sawmills would cut up whatever was coming out of the forest they were working in, and they would usually send the timbers out to builders as a mix of species. This often did make sense - many Australian timbers have similar structural properties and there was no need to separate them.

When we process structural timbers from a demolition there is usually between 5 and 15 species present. Some of them we sort and separate. Others of similar durability and colour we leave as a mix, following on from the old sawmills… SEE ALL OUR RECYCLED SPECIES

THOR'S TIMBER STORY

I first started learning about timber as a kid, watching my grandfather in his shed and passing him tools, sweeping up sawdust and holding boards steady for him. He bought me my first hand plane when I was 12, and my first project with it was shaping a couple of pairs of stilts for my brother and I… READ MORE

ETHOS & ENVIRONMENTAL MANUFACTURE

Thor’s Hammer grew out of Thor Diesendorf’s passion for making furniture and building with recycled timbers. Sustainability and hands-on making is at the core of what we do.

Recycled Australian hardwoods are an amazing resource - dense and durable and with a huge range of colours and grain. We aim to show our respect for these timbers by designing products and pieces that are both practical and beautiful.

Our pieces are designed with care and thought for the design, the material and the environment... READ MORE
