Feature Pergola with Rustic Weathering Effect

October 2022

The grey colouring on this vine-covered feature pergola is entirely intentional, and (we think) it’s absolute perfection! Using our high durability Ironbark / Dense Reds posts, 360 Building Solutions constructed this stunning pergola as well as the decking in the same species. With architecture by Architecture Republic, this Canberra home is extremely energy efficient, utilising not only recycled timber, but also recycled bricks and rammed earth internally.

Working with these dense and durable species, the clients were able to choose whether or not to coat with an oil finish because these durable species don't need an oil finish for protection. Coating retains the original colour and appearance of the timber, while leaving uncoated allows the timber to weather and go grey, and saves on maintenance time and costs.

As you can see, they decided not to coat the pergola posts resulting in the greying effect that adds a rustic familiarity that is just perfect for a low-key outdoor entertaining area like this one.

If they had decided to coat the timber—and many people do—we would have recommended they use natural plant oil based Osmo UV Protection Oil. The Osmo finishes are available from our workshop and showroom.
