We recently supplied timber stair treads to a project in Lyneham, Canberra. The renovation won the HIA ACT / Southern NSW Region Renovation / Addition Project of the year and small lot Housing of the year! It was a joint entry by Jefferson Godfrey Architects and the builder Reliabuilt Pty Ltd.
The 60mm thick stair treads were supplied in recycled red hardwoods salvaged from joists at the Q Stores Woolstores demolition, Alexandria Sydney.
This timber is approximately 80 years old and would have been logged from old growth East Coast forests around the time of the Second World War. The trees that these dense old timbers came from would up to 200 years old.
If we don't get hold of this timber from the demolition site it goes to landfill which is a huge waste. Keep choosing recycled timber for your projects and keep good timber out of landfill!
We worked with the builder to get exact dimensions of the steel staircase supports and CNC machined a rebate in the bottom of the timber to take the steel support panel and LED lighting strip.
Thor's Hammer regularly works with builders, architects, interior designers and home renovators to develop the best possible use for recycled Australian hardwood utilising it's amazing strength, durability and beauty.
