What are Fire Briquettes?

Imagine if you took all the sawdust produced in a furniture and joinery workshop and turned it into something useful. That’s exactly what inspired Thor Diesendorf to create our first Fire Briquettes, 10 years ago.

A Fire Briquette is a block of highly compressed sawdust, perfect for powering your wood stove or fireplace. The saw dust is wood waste, collected by extractor fans in our workshop. It’s one of the many ways we reduce waste and our impact on the environment.

The Challenge

As timber recyclers, we have tons of salvaged timber coming through our site every day. A large portion is either remilled or turned into our custom made furniture. An unavoidable byproduct of these processes is the large amounts of hardwood sawdust that is left over. Thor wanted to reduce waste by making something with the sawdust. Fire briquettes seemed like the obvious solution.

Making A Briquette

Unable to find a machine here in Australia, Thor imported a German press and installed it in a customised shipping container. The dust extractor was rerouted to the press (aka briquette machine) to collect all the sawdust from the workshop and compress it into small blocks (we call ‘em briquettes), approximately 15cm x 6cm x 9cm long. Last year the press produced nearly 90 tonnes of briquettes.

But how does it work? By using immense hydraulic pressure we compress the sawdust into fire briquettes and the natural lignins (plant polymers or natural glue) in the timber hold it all together. That’s it! No glue, no nasty bonding agent, just Australian hardwood. With an average moisture content of 12% they are considerably drier than firewood (which normally sits around 26%), making for hotter and cleaner burning fires with less smoke, less ash and less creosote build up.

"Our timber is so dry because it is recycled. We get a dry briquette with a low moisture content, it might have half to a third of the moisture content than a normal block of firewood," Thor Diesendorf
