We have just received a big truck load of wide floor joists from an old building in Harris St, Ultimo. It isn’t often that these 100 plus year old buildings are demolished these days, so we couldn’t pass up the chance to salvage the wide 250x60mm joists.
In the old days they built with the hardwoods green and unseasoned straight from the sawmill. The timber has had over 100 years to season in the building and is in excellent condition. Because they are old floor joists they were held nice and straight while they seasoned by the floorboards which were nailed to them on top, and the herringbone braces underneath.
The joists are nearly all Blackbutt, which is hard and durable and comes up a light brown colour. And it must have originally been sawn from the big old growth trees back in the day – the quality is great.
These boards will be great for extra thick table tops and kitchen bench tops. We haven’t machined any yet (we are still getting the nails out!) but they will come up pretty close to the timber in the photos below.
If you would like something awesome made with the old Ultimo joists, drop us a line or get in touch.
