We are very excited to announce Thor’s Hammer is now selling the most efficient and environmentally friendly fire wood (briquettes) on the market!
We have recently installed a RUF Briquetting machine to compress all of our sawdust into extremely dense and low moisture content fuel perfect for your wood stove / heater. The RUF is a very powerful German made machine which makes a large 14x10x6cm brick, using the natural lignins in the timber to bind the sawdust under massive pressure.
Thor’s Hammer salvage Australian Hardwoods typically between 50 and 100 years old, so the timber and sawdust is dry as hell after plenty of time to season.
This fire briquette project was born from a couple of our staff recently installing super efficient wood stoves, they ran out of recycled off cuts during last winter and purchased firewood from local suppliers only to find that the firewood they paid for was 25% + in moisture content, causing a huge amount of smoke, inefficient burn and creosote build up in the stove and flue. On top of that they had to stack it and split it. We thought there had to be a better option…. And we found it!
Our tests have shown that the briquettes made in our RUF machine have a similiar weight per cubic metre to Iron Bark and have a moisture content of 12% or less, giving you a hot burning fire with minimal smoke or creosote build up.
The briquettes are available in 950kg minimum weight pallets (approx 910 briquettes) for $350 including delivery within Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Boxes of 12 briquettes for $12.50 (currently pick up from Thor's Hammer only)
It is important to note fire briquettes cost significantly more per tonne than firewood for a number of reasons: The moisture content is far less so you pay for less water weight, get far greater efficiency and a much hotter burn. The Guardian says they produce 50% more heat than firewood! Read more on the Guardian article here.

And did we mention you can give away your axe? The pallet is delivered to your house, and you can simply load the briquettes straight into your fire, no seasoning, stacking or chopping.
